“The best thing is to look natural, but it takes makeup to look natural” – Calvin Klein
This week I had an opportunity to chat with awesome Vinolia Langa, owner of Malebo Designs. This amazing 25 year old mother of two beautiful kids namely, Ofentse, aged 8, and Khumo, who is 2, is a true epitome of excellence and her dedication and ability to multitask is like no other. She is both a brilliant fashion designer and part-time makeup artist and her work speaks for itself. I have seen some of her work and I was truly in awe at how good she is.
Vinolia was born to occupy this field. Her grandmother was a seamstress, and she has been in the fashion industry since 2014. She started out as an
intern for other designers but soon realized her unique talent and that she was unable to express her creativity while working for someone else so this made her very miserable she says. Seeing how creative she was, her mother advised her to start her own business. She had experienced a lot of hardships and challenges not only as a designer but in her personal capacity as well but she always keeps herself motivated because the joy and fulfilment she gets at seeing the satisfaction of her customers as well as knowing that she is able to provide for her own kids gives her the push she needs to keep going.
I cannot describe to you my delight when someone gets to a point where they realize how miserable they are when they get exposed to the realization that there is something out there better than their normal circumstances, whatever their circumstance. So I was exhilarated when Vinolia mentioned that she was miserable working with other designers, unable to maximise her full creative potential. Most of us sabotage ourselves because we are either too afraid to dream big or we wait for someone to hold our hand and pick us up.
For support, as a designer you can check The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives programme presented by Design Indaba and the Department of Arts and Culture provides support, education and mentoring for South Africa's future designers. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity has helped launch the careers of celebrated and vibrant young designers such as Laduma Ngxokolo, Thebe Magugu, Daniel Ting Chong and Renée Rossouw.
I recently wrote about how I was provoked; I talked about the people who were hanging around by the pool John 5. You see, among these people was a man who had an infirmity for 38 years and it is said that when Jesus saw him lie, He knew that he had been in that situation for a very long time. He saw how comfortable he was in that situation, so He asked him if he wanted to be made whole, and he went on to justify his condition by blaming other people for their failure to help him. You have to get to a point where you realize that you cannot continue to blame other people for your struggles, your spouse who left, your father who has not been around, your boss who hates you, or where you grew up.
Your actions have to show that you want a better life than the one you currently have. You have to be miserable and uncomfortable enough to realize that you do not want to spend another minute in this situation. Refuse to just survive only Do not build a monument in your problem place, build a tent rather and expect things to change and grab your tent and move on when things change, because they always change.
As I listed to Vinolia talk about her life, I was reminded of Calvin Klein who is known worldwide for his extravagance in the fashion industry. Like Vinolia, I read that Calvin accredits his success to his mother, who instilled in him the love of art and fashion. He started his career as a loner who taught himself how to sketch and sew. Calvin always knew that he wanted to be a fashion designer. He always dreamt of starting his own fashion company. For that, he even worked at his father's grocery store to make extra money. In 1968, Klein founded his own company, Calvin Klein Ltd., with his friend as his business partner. In 1973, Klein diversified his company's line of manufacturing and got engrossed in other sections like sportswear and giving birth to American leisurewear. He is also known for his line of menswear and women's wear. He also designs home collections, fragrances and cosmetics.
Whatever has been holding you back, I want you to realize that you cannot spent your whole life talking about people who have not helped you or feeling sorry for yourself hoping people will pity you. When people pity you, they enable you to remain in the same position. Take responsibility for your life, including your success and failures. Shake off the dust and stand up, run, walk, crawl or drag yourself, but refuse to remain in that position for the rest of your life. Want more, aim for better, and dream bigger – you have great potential in you and you are well able to do it, so do it and do it all.
Thought: “Cause me to hear Your loving-kindness in the morning, for in You do I trust; cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to You” – Psalm 143:8
